General Poker Terms
- Action: The player’s turn to act in the game.
- All-In: A player bets all their remaining chips.
- Ante: A small forced bet required from all players before the hand is dealt.
- Blinds: Forced bets posted by the two players to the left of the dealer in games like Texas Hold’em (small blind and big blind).
- Burn Card: A card removed from the top of the deck before dealing community cards to prevent card tracking.
- Buy-In: The amount required to enter a cash game or tournament.
- Call: Matching the current bet to stay in the hand.
- Check: Passing the action to the next player without betting.
- Raise: Increasing the current bet amount.
- Fold: Discarding your hand and exiting the round.
- Pot: The total amount of chips wagered in a hand.
- Chop: Splitting the pot between two or more players with equivalent hands.
Cash Game-Specific Terms
- Rake: A small percentage of the pot taken by the house as a fee in cash games.
- Straddle: An optional blind bet made before cards are dealt, typically double the big blind.
- Run It Twice: Running the remaining community cards twice to split the pot into two separate outcomes.
- Cap: The maximum number of raises allowed in a betting round (in limit games).
- Add-On: Additional chips a player can purchase in certain cash games.
Tournament-Specific Terms
- Bubble: The position just before payouts begin in a tournament; the player eliminated here gets no prize.
- Rebuy: The option to buy back into the tournament after losing all chips (during the rebuy period).
- Add-On: Additional chips available for purchase at a specific point in the tournament.
- Level: A predefined period during which blinds and antes are set at a certain value.
